Unbeatable A Thing of the Past: The Reasons India's Test Match Reputation Has Crumbled

The Indian cricket team's unexpected 0-2 loss to South Africa in the recently concluded Test series has left the team reeling.

In the final match, South Africa gave India a record defeat in terms of runs, defying expectations. This represented the Proteas' maiden series victory in the subcontinent in a quarter-century and the host nation's second defeat at home in just 12 months after a 12-year invincible streak.

The momentum established in the last several months has largely dissipated and the careers of a number of cricketers - along with team coach Gautam Gambhir - are under scrutiny.

Early Optimism Disappears

The emerging side's commendable display in England this summer, under a fresh leadership, suggested a successful handover post the close together departures of veterans Ashwin, Rohit Sharma, and Virat Kohli.

A straightforward 2-0 win over West Indies at the commencement of the home campaign boosted that belief, till the Proteas came and inflicted a crushing loss.

The home side were somewhat unlucky that captain Gill got injured early on in the initial match and was ruled out in the contest. However, that neither explains nor absolves the squad of the terribly sub-par showing in each match against South Africa.

Several established players took a hit, and a few members hoping for lengthy Test careers were shown as not up to the mark - in ability or temperament - for the format.

Concerning History

This was the second clean sweep at home suffered by India in just over a year. In 2024, unfancied the Kiwis had pulled off a surprising 3-0 victory which essentially denied the hosts a place in the Test championship finale.

The recent defeat to South Africa threatens to derail India's hopes of making the showpiece of this cycle also.

From number three in the WTC rankings ahead of the matches, India have dropped to the fifth spot. Even though nine more Tests are remaining, half of these are against the Aussies. Typically, playing at home would be a major plus - including against the powerful Australians. However the failures against the Kiwis and the Proteas leave little scope for such assurance.

Roots of the Decline

The national team's frailty in Test cricket has been badly exposed. However, the reason India have performed so poorly in Test matches on home soil in recent times is continues to confuse.

In the 21st century, the Indian cricket team were considered invincible in Test cricket at home. Under sweltering weather and on surfaces that favored spin bowling and suited their batsmen and bowlers, the hosts brooked no opposition. The odd series defeat, such as in 2012-13 against the English, was seen as an aberration.

Currently, India appear to be easy pickings in their own backyard.

Versus New Zealand in last year and South Africa currently, the home side were defeated by their own tactics. The surfaces they curated to favor their game backfired spectacularly, as rivals used them more effectively, outplaying the Indian batters and bowlers when it counted the most.

What's Gone Wrong?

Certain analysts propose that the Indian team is floundering in home conditions because local wickets have been altered from turners to quick wickets to train the squad to succeed abroad.

A few mention that the IPL, in which several international stars play, has taken away the surprise and difficulty home wickets would present to them before.

Although there is validity in these views, it still does not explain the reason the side's results at home have seen such a dramatic drop.

Multiple Failings

Many past stars point to a multi-faceted challenge, not limited to a couple of reasons.

Critics and players have highlighted various flaws following India's humiliating loss to the South Africans: underrating the rivals, lack of preparation, poor choices, excessive self-belief, frequent changes of the playing XI, and favoring white-ball over red-ball cricket.

This was clear in the displays of the team.

Players such as Pant and Yashasvi Jaiswal, of whom high hopes were held, were punished for their nonchalance, while Sudarshan, Nitish Kumar Reddy, and Dhruv Jurel - who were hoping to secure their position in the squad - fell short in ability and attitude, paying a heavy price for their casual attitude.

Only a handful - Jadeja, Jasprit Bumrah, Kuldeep, Siraj and Sundar - lived up to their ability and standing - but inadequately to claim wins.

Management Questions

The analysis targeted just the players - selectors and support staff were also questioned, spurred on by distraught fans and vocal past stars. Under focus of the criticism was mentor Gambhir.
